The Sims 2 Running In 2020 by Old Kid

If this document somehow finds you and you don't know what to do about it, feel free to contact me at www.facebook.com/oldkidgaming or patrickclaytonworking@gmail.com. If it doesn't work for you, refer to the bigger, meaner document for troubleshooting and more details. Getting this to run is a big, weird problem with a lot of moving parts, but hopefully this gets you going.

What I am writing is just a simplified and self-tested version of this document:

The guide uses these files and programs:
Graphics Rule Maker: https://www.simsnetwork.com/tools/graphics-rules-maker
4GB Patch: https://www.ntcore.com/?page_id=371
DXVK: https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases

What I Did To Make It Work

(1) Download the game here: https://oldgamesdownload.com/the-sims-2-ultimate-collection/
This version has been repackaged to include all the expansion content and to run without a CD/DVD.

(2) Install the game using default settings, this will make the rest of the guide make more sense when referencing the default install directories.

(3) Get my Sims2stuff Pack here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ufD0p2SQls4ugHb3NSUnlxQka1V5EvhD/view?usp=sharing.
It is just a zip of files I am combining so you don't have to download from multiple sources. Extract the pack somewhere convenient.

(4) Run "4gb_patch.exe" and apply the patch to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mr DJ\The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection\The Sims 2 Mansion and Garden Stuff\TSBin\Sims2EP9.exe"

(5) Copy "d3d9.dll" to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mr DJ\The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection\The Sims 2 Mansion and Garden Stuff\TSBin\" directory.

(6) Install Graphic Rules Maker (graphicsrulesmaker-2.0.0-64bit.exe). This will allow you to change the game to run at a modern resolution, as well as apply some tweaks for compatibility and stability.

(7) Run Graphic Rules Maker. Make sure you are running as As Admin, and apply these settings:
    Game: The Sims 2
Path: "C:/Program Files (x86)/Mr DJ/The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection/The Sims 2 Mansion and Garden Stuff"
    ---Boxes Checked---
    x Force texture memory: 1696
x Disable Texture memory estimate adjustment
    x Enable Driver's memory manager
    x Disable Sim Shadows
x Fix AMD Radeon HD 7000 series recognition
    x High Quality Intel Graphics
    x Supper VSync on Intel
Default Resolution: 1280x720
Maximum Resolution: 1280x720
Click "Save Files..", then accept changes. It should detect your graphics card. (This will fail and spit out an error if you are not running the program as admin.)

(8) Create a Desktop Shortcut And Enable Windowed Mode. This is so you have something to click on to run, as well as setting a flag to run the game in a window. I have had it work in fullscreen, but many report that it will crash more readily as a full screen application.
    - Navigate to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mr DJ\The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection\The Sims 2 Mansion and Garden Stuff\TSBin\
    - Right click on Sims2EP9.exe and "Send To", "Desktop (create shortcut)".
    - Goto the desktop shortcut you just made, right click and go to "Properties".
    - Add a "-W" to the very end of the "Target" field. It should read:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Mr DJ\The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection\The Sims 2 Mansion and Garden
Stuff\TSBin\Sims2EP9.exe" -w

That's it! I didn't realize it took a really long time to load assets in this game, but it eventually does load! I ran the game for a good couple hours, and it didn't crash once I put it in windowed mode. Good luck!
